Each parent is entitled to two weeks paid leave in respect of a child born or adopted after 1st November 2019, and is available to both employed and self employed parents. The leave period is paid by the Department of Social Protection, subject to PRSI record, at the rate of €245 per week. It is at the discretion of employers as to whether this benefit is topped up and six weeks notice of intention to take Parents Leave must be given to employers. Parents Leave may be taken as two continuous weeks or in periods of not less than one week. Standard employment benefits continue to apply during periods of Parents Leave.
Parents Leave is in addition to Parental Leave (currently 22 weeks unpaid leave) and Paternity Leave (two weeks paid leave for parents other than the mother in first six months).
