With effect 1st August 2024, parent’s leave entitlement has increased for each parent to 9 weeks’ leave during the first 2 years of a child’s life, or in the case of adoption, the leave may be availed of within 2 years of the placement of a child with the family.
The extended leave entitlement will apply to children born or adopted after 1st August 2024 or if a child is under the age of 2 on August 1st, 2024, or an adopted child has been placed for a period less than 2 years before 1st August 2024.
Employees are not entitled to be paid by their employer during periods of parents leave but may qualify for the payment of Parents Benefit of €274 per week subject to their PRSI record. Six weeks’ notice must be given of intention to take parents leave and it may be taken as one complete period of 9 weeks or in blocks of not less than one week.
